Montgomery Wales

Montgomery is a small town with a big history. The town of nearly 1,300 people is situated in the Welsh Marches (the lands along the English and Welsh border) and Iron Age Celts, the Romans, the Saxons, the Normans, the English Civil War and many other historical forces all left their mark here

Fast forward to the 21st century and Montgomery, a Georgian gem, is tucked away from the madding crowds, but just 3 miles from the A483 - a main visitor route into Mid Wales. With its medieval street layout, imposing Town Hall, mix of Georgian, Victorian and timber framed buildings and an active and generous community, it’s a place where time seems to stand still.

A stone’s throw from Offa’s Dyke National Trails and National Cycle Route 81 and within 30 minutes’ drive of the Cambrian Way Montgomery is a superb base from which to explore scenic mid-Wales. And, with a wealth of comfortable and friendly places to stay, as well as to eat and drink, you can be sure of a warm welcome in the town.

Montgomery’s visitors are charmed by the Georgian town square, impressive Town Hall, Grade1-listed St Nicholas Church and the story of the Robber's Grave. Offa's Dyke National Trail and the Welsh - Shropshire border is just one mile from the town.

Montgomery is an historic Border market town situated in the Welsh Marches and is the old county town of Montgomeryshire. There is a mixture of Georgian, Victorian and much earlier half timbered architecture . The whole town within the ancient walls is a Conservation Area and is the jewel at the heart of the designated Outstanding Historic Landscape Area of the Vale of Montgomery.

The town was granted a Royal Charter in 1227 to enable it to build a wall and a ditch for protection and to hold fairs and markets. These continue today. The street plan has changed little in almost eight centuries; being laid out on the original medieval street pattern at the foot of an imposing cliff crowned with the ruins of Montgomery Castle which is a CADW protected site. It is only a mile from the Shropshire border and Offa’s Dyke National Trail which attracts both national and international walkers.
